Part 1 - theory test:
The theory test is the first of three tests you will need to pass before you can register as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
It is made up of two elements:
- a set of multiple choice questions
- a hazard perception test
The theory test calls for a higher standard of knowledge than that expected of a learner driver, so you'll need to prepare thoroughly.
This guide will explain what happens in each part of the ADI theory test, and what you need to do to pass. It also describes how to book your test, and what to do if you have special requirements.

Part 2 - Practial Driving Test
Part two of the qualifying test for potential driving instructors is a practical assessment of your driving ability. It involves separate assessments of your eyesight, and your driving technique.
You must pass both parts of the test at the same attempt. the test - which lasts for about 60 minutes.
Before you take the test
You need to make sure that you bring along your theory test pass certificate and your valid GB or Northern Ireland driving licence. If you have a photocard-style licence, you must bring both parts of the licence - the photocard and the paper counterpart - to the test.
If your licence does not have your photograph on it, you will need to bring along a current passport.
You must also check that the vehicle you want to use is suitable. You can see the page in this guide on vehicle requirements for part two of the Approved Driving Instructor test.
The eyesight test
You must be able to read in good daylight a motor vehicle registration plate containing letters and figures:
- 79 millimetres in height and 57 millimetres wide at a distance of 27.5 metres
If you do not pass the eyesight test, you will not be allowed to take the driving ability part. The test will be marked as a fail and will count as one of the three allowed attempts at part two of the test.
Test of driving technique
The Approved Driving Instructor part two test is far more difficult than the learner driver test. To pass, you will need to display a very high standard of competence. You must show that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply them in practice.
At the start of the test, you will be asked questions on basic vehicle safety. You must satisfy the examiner on all of the following:
- expert handling of the controls
- use of correct road procedure
- anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
- sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
- consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
- driving in an environmentally friendly manner
